Casa Gangotena: Luxury in the heart of colonial Quito

Nestled in the heart of Quito's colonial center, lies an oasis of tranquility and elegance.  Casa Gangotena is a special retreat for visitors seeking to extend their stay and explore the city's rich history. A fixture on Plaza San Francisco's southwest corner, Casa Gangotena shares much of the ancient square's storied past.

Dating back to the time of the Incas, the mansion occupies a spot where Incan temples once stood. Following the conquest of the Incas, Franciscan missionaries established the church and convent of San Francisco.  A mansion was built on the present building's site that served as residence for several 19th century presidents.  The mansion burned down in 1914, and the land was purchased by the wealthy and influential Gangotena family who rebuilt the mansion in 1924.

The mansion was sold in the mid-2000s and in 2011 reopened as an elegant 31-room luxury boutique hotel, and has rapidly amassed a collection of travel awards and international accolades.

The hotel's Restaurant "Cedron" features innovative and suberb gastronomy in an elegant and refined setting.

The glass-enclosed patio hosts a Café Quiteño every afternoon, fashioned after the classic British High Tea. Enjoy a taste of cafe society, as guests and local Quiteños meet and socialize amidst the palms and ferns under the glass roof. Enjoy an eclectic mix of Ecuadorian and classic sweet and savory treats along with a cup of tea, Ecuadorian coffee or legendary hot cocoa.

Each of the hotel's 31 guest rooms and suites are each adorned in luxury upholstery, plush carpets, fine linens, and rich Art-Deco period furnishings. En-suite facilities include separate showers and bathtubs and luxury toiletries.  Modern amenities and technology include flat-screen televisions, in-room safes, and WiFi.

The Junior Suite features a painstakingly restored original mural from the original Gangotena family mansion.
