Day 4: Travel south to Cotopaxi, Ecuador’s second highest volcano as well as the surrounding Cotopaxi National Park. For hikers, there’s an opportunity to hike from the trail head at 14,764’ (4500m) up to the Jose Ribas shelter at 15,958’ elevation, which is the base camp for those mounting an expedition to the summit. For non-hikers, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the fascinating endemic nature and unique flora and fauna of the region. You’ll enjoy lunch at a nearby hacienda before driving back to Quito.
Day 5: Private transfer back to the airport for your flight to Galapagos (pre-cruise extension), or flight home (post-cruise extension).

Otavalo | Full-Day Tour
A visit to Otavalo village and market provides a unique and rewarding cultural extension to any Galápagos tour. Otavaleños have maintained a strong identity throughout Ecuador’s history and are easily identifiable from their distinctive dress. While visiting the famed Otavalo Plaza de los Ponchos market, you will be awash in artisan stalls selling colorful handmade textiles and paintings, beautiful jewelry, and skillfully-crafted leather goods. Many of the artisans displaying their wares have worked for years to master and preserve traditional crafts and production techniques. The market is open every day, with the biggest vendor turnout on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Be prepared to bargain!
In the verdant Avenue of Volcanoes between Quito and Otavalo, you will visit several villages known for a distinctive craft or natural feature: Cotacachi for leatherwork, Cayambe for their famous bisccochos salt biscuits and cheese, Peguche for music, weaving and waterfalls, San Pablo for lake views. If there is time, a visit to scenic Lake Cuicocha will be included.
Extension Itinerary
Depart 8:00 am for the drive north to Otavalo. The road winds up and down river valleys cut into the rich volcanic soils. Pass greenhouses where the world’s long-stemmed roses are grown. Stop enroute to sample traditional Ecuadorian snacks and fruit.
Arriving into Otavalo, enjoy spectacular views of Imbabura, Cotacachi and Pataquí volcanos. Weather permitting, you might glimpse mighty Cayambe Volcano towering off in the distance. Wander through the Plaza de los Ponchos artisan craft market and engage with local merchants.
Depending on time spent at the craft market, you may also have an opportunity to visit Peguche for a short walk to a waterfall or visit the Artesanía el Gran Cóndor weaver’s cooperative and Nanda Mañachi Andean musicians workshop. Depending on interest, you may choose to visit the hat factories in the nearby village of Iluman or the leather shops across the valley in Cotacachi.
Time and weather permitting, visit scenic Lago Cuicocha. Return to Quito or the airport. Approximate return time back to Quito is between 6:00 pm and 6:30 pm. Lunch included.

Cotopaxi | Full-Day Tour
Located just 30 miles south of Quito along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, Cotopaxi can often be seen from Quito on a clear day. Rising from a base of 12,470 ft. (3,800 m), Cotopaxi is Ecuador’s second highest summit at 19,347 ft. (5,897 m).
Cotopaxi is also one of the most active volcanoes in Ecuador. The last eruption started in August 2015 and subsided in January 2016. Scientists believe the volcano has erupted at least 87 times with the earliest eruption recorded in 1534.
The volcano and surrounding grasslands make up Cotopaxi National Park, a protected ecological reserve encompassing 140 square miles (36,000 hectares). The varied topography and multiple elevation zones provide a wealth of bird life as well as well as unique flora.
Extension Itinerary
Depart 9:00 am from Quito heading south along the “Avenue of the Volcanoes”. You’ll arrive at the Cotopaxi National Park approximately midday. You’ll have an opportunity to explore the fascinating endemic nature and a unique wildlife of the region, including one of the most representative plant species – the Chuquiragua – Ecuador’s beautiful national flower, as well as wild horses, deer, and llamas.
At Limpiopungo Lake, located near Mount Rumiñahui (4757 meters), you’ll have a chance for a little bird-watching. With any luck, you may spot attractive lapwings and the only mountain gull in the world, the Andean Gull.
Your included lunch will be enjoyed at a nearby colonial hacienda.

Extension Itinerary | Post-Galapagos
Day 1 | Sunday: After a 30-minute flight from Quito to the Amazonian city of Coca, you’ll transfer to the dock and board a motorized canoe for a scenic 90-minute journey down the river. Along the way, take in the breathtaking beauty of the Amazon until we reach Anakonda. There, expert local naturalist guides will welcome you with a brief, informative introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon. After dinner, you’ll embark on a nighttime forest walk to listen to the sounds of the rainforest and observe the nocturnal wildlife.
Day 2 | Monday: Journey downstream to the Pañayacu River delta and canoe to Pañacocha Lake, known as "Piranha Lagoon" in the native Kichwa language. This blackwater ecosystem is surrounded by a protected rainforest, home to primates, birds, piranhas, Paíche or pirarucu (one of the world’s largest freshwater fish), white caimans, and numerous other aquatic animals. You'll have the opportunity to spot these creatures during a guided walk. Afterward, recharge with an Amazon-style barbecue at a community camp. Following a short rest, you can enjoy kayaking and swimming. Back on board the Anakonda, deepen your understanding of the region with an informative talk given by our guides.
Day 3 | Tuesday: Early morning, set out on motorized canoes to witness one of the most incredible sights in the Western Amazon – the famous parrot clay licks. This unique location is rich in minerals and attracts hundreds of colorful parrots, parakeets, and other Amazonian birds that gather to lick the clay, which aids their digestion. In the afternoon, visit the Kichwa women's community project to learn about the indigenous lifestyle along the Napo River, their ancestral culture, and their community. You'll have the opportunity to support them by purchasing handicrafts, local products, and souvenirs, and you can also participate in the Charapas Turtle Conservation project that we support in collaboration with the community.
Day 4 | Wednesday: Enjoy your journey back to Puerto Providencia, where you will disembark from Anakonda and board a motorized canoe for the ride back to the city of Coca. From there, you will return to Quito and transfer to the Holiday Inn Quito Airport, where you can relax until your late flight home.

Hacienda Zuleta is a stunning and historic luxury country inn situated on a 4,000-acre working farm. Once the private home of Ecuador’s most colorful president, the hacienda sits in the heart of a breathtaking valley, and features 15 beautifully decorated rooms. Guests are treated to a serene atmosphere, lush gardens, and rich cultural experiences along with delicious home-cooked Ecuadorian cuisine. All meals are prepared with organic ingredients produced within the hacienda’s grounds.
During your stay, you will have the opportunity to explore Zuleta’s extensive estate by taking part in a variety of activities including hikes and garden strolls, as well as tours of the Hacienda’s historic buildings, embroidery workshop, and traditional dairy. The Hacienda also offers guests the opportunity to take part in mountain biking, horseback riding, embroidery classes, and cooking classes for an additional cost.
The Hacienda is home to a variety wildlife, including the Andean condor and giant hummingbird. Guests may even catch a glimpse of a Spectacled Bear, South America’s only bear species. Day 1: Private transfer from the airport to Hacienda Zuleta for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Explore the miles of trails around Zuleta by horseback, mountain bike, or foot. Visit the Women’s Community Embroidery Project and the Condor Huasi Project. Tour the working farm and learn about cheese making at the dairy, or fishing at the trout farm. Or relax by one of the fireplaces with a glass of wine.

Hacienda La Danesa | 2-Night Extension
An active adventure into the lush coastal forests just one hour from Guayaquil
Hacienda La Danesa is a family-owned lodge situated on a working dairy farm, cacao and teak plantation offering gracious hospitality and active adventures.
During your stay, you will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities including cacao and chocolate making, cooking classes, hikes into the cloud forest, horseback riding, tubing in the nearby rivers, as well as tours of the hacienda’s dairy operations. For those seeking a little relaxation, consider a in room massage or spa treatment.
Extension Itinerary (may also be added before Galápagos)
Day 1: Private transfer from your hotel or airport in Guayaquil to Hacienda La Danesa. Brief orientation of lodge and grounds, chocolate and cacao workshop, followed by three-course farm to table lunch. Following lunch, try your hand at milking at the working dairy, then head to the river by bike and relax tubing in the river. Join other guests for drinks on the terrace before dinner.
Day 2: After breakfast, head to Esperanza Cloud Forest for a hike through pristine woodlands dense with bromeliads, orchids, ferns and elusive wildlife to a series of three waterfalls where you can take a dip in the refreshing waters and book an optional rappel down the falls, followed by a visit to local sugar cane farmer to produce your own sugar cane juice. Return back to the hacienda in time for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure, wandering the gardens, go horseback riding or book a rejuvenating in-room massage. In the early evening, join other guests for drinks on the terrace before enjoying a three-course farm to table meal.
Day 3: Enjoy breakfast in the gardens before returning back to Guayaquil.

Mashpi Cloud Forest | 4-Night Extension

Explorations, activities and facilities: you may enjoy walking maintained jungle trails, hiking to waterfalls, birding, visiting the hummingbird garden, climbing the observation tower, riding the Sky Bike, gliding on the Dragonfly gondola ride, learning at the Butterfly Life Center, doing yoga in the forest, getting spa treatments, and watching the mist drift among the peaks through the sky-high windows. Extension Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre Airport. You will be met outside customs or baggage claim for a private transfer to your hotel.
